Songwriting Workshop – “Character Development with Martin Gilmore”

Strong characters can open songs up to broader ideas, sharper perspectives, and deeper emotional impact. In this workshop, we’ll explore how developing clear narrative voices can strengthen songs and help writers move beyond “same voice, different song” syndrome.

We’ll look at techniques such as using unreliable narrators, borrowing a voice or point of view, putting a character to an emotion, and writing from positions of expertise you may not personally hold. These approaches can clarify subject matter, bring authority to complex topics, and make songwriting decisions more focused and effective.
