A songwriting workshop with Crow Johnson Evans (aka Auntie Crow)
Who is this for?
This workshop is for songwriters who already know the joy and the wrestle of writing songs, whether on your own or with co-writers, and who are curious about new ways of getting to the songs that feel uniquely yours. If you’ve written a handful of songs and are wondering how to go deeper, truer, stranger, or more you, this space is for you.
What to bring
Paper, pencil, instrument, water bottle, hat, a sense of humor, curiosity, and a smattering of courage.
What to expect
Crow Johnson Evans shares a lifetime of accumulated hints, prompts, exercises, stories, and philosophical frameworks gathered over seven decades of writing songs, many of which she and others have recorded. This is not about formulas or fixing your work. It’s about opening doors, following instincts, and learning how to listen for the songs that are already trying to find you.
What will be expected of you
Only as much participation as you feel comfortable with in the moment. You are welcome to jump in, share, write, or simply observe and take notes. Please refrain from video recording without permission.
What you’ll take away
A personal roadmap, with many possible trails, to help enrich and expand what you already know how to do: write one-of-a-kind, authentic songs that only you can write.

Crow Johnson Evans, sometimes known as Auntie Crow, first played the main stage at Kerrville
in 1980. With beginnings back in the 1960s in Texas, Canada, and the United Kingdom, she
established the practice of performing only self-penned songs.
“It wasn’t that I thought my writing was the best. But to come up with an entertaining evening
of songs, I had to push my songwriter limits. A challenge I still welcome..”
You may have visited the Crow’s Nest, which is a K’ville campsite she started. Each person
plays one song at a time in the circle around the campfire…And it sometimes goes til dawn.
Crow received the first ever Spirit of Kerrville award in 1993. And others, like the Kate Wolf
Memorial award in DC. She has released many albums and other people have recorded her
songs.
